Kayak route to the Cova Tallada (Dénia)
The kayak route to the Cova Tallada is one of the most beautiful coastal excursions that can be done in the province of Alicante.
In this sea crossing you will sail along the cliffs of the Marine Reserve of Cap de Sant Antoni (Montgó Natural Park), with the added attraction of visiting a place of great beauty and environmental and historical values such as the Cova Tallada.
Once in the Cova Tallada, we disembark at the old quarry jetty, on the tiny rocky beach inside the cave itself.
After leaving the kayaks moored, it is time to enter the deepest part of the cave, a visit that is done without the need for caving equipment, but with a good flashlight and a lot of caution (helmet recommended).
Would you like to do this kayaking + caving excursion? Read on, we’ll tell you everything you need to know!
How is the kayak tour to the Cova Tallada?
The kayak route to the Cova Tallada has a distance of 1 nautical mile (2 km. approx.) round trip, which means that it is of easy difficulty.
It usually takes about 3 hours between the round trip + the visit to the cave, swimming and snorkeling.
This activity can be done with children, but it is recommended that each child be accompanied by an adult using a double kayak.
If the children are small they can go two in a kayak together with an adult (the monitors will study each case to give you the best solution).
The kayak tour starts at Platja de les Arenetes (the end of Les Rotes), next to the restaurant Ca Nano.
Before starting, the instructors give a brief tutorial on kayak handling and safety recommendations.
From there, we sail parallel to the coast, near the cliffs, passing by places of great beauty and high environmental value.
This leads to the small natural bay that forms in front of the cave entrance.
You disembark inside the cave (since 2023, a new area has been used, which corresponds to the old Cova Tallada wharf).
There is free time to visit the interior of the cave and snorkel in the area. To finish the excursion, we return the same way.
This kayak excursion is very popular, so advance reservations are recommended:
TIP: if you want to visit the Cova Tallada with children, the easiest and safest way for them is to do it by kayak, as the hiking route is of high difficulty and requires overcoming complicated terrain and a dangerous slope to enter the cave.
Reserve Kayak Excursion
There are several active tourism companies that make the excursion to the Cova Tallada.
This activity is usually offered from May to October, with more or less departures scheduled depending on the month.
Safety in activities
It is important to book with a registered company that complies with safety and sustainability protocols, since the excursion takes place in a protected natural area.
We recommend you to book the tour with a local company, as it is the most sustainable. Our recommendation is the company Segway Trip Denia. You can book directly on their website or, more convenient and for the same price (60€), on Civitatis.com:
Can I do the route on my own?
Yes, you can do the route on your own sea kayak or paddle surf board. Please note that you will have to find parking (the area is very crowded in summer) and manage the logistics of the kayak on your own, as the area does not rent kayaks for free. You will also have to make a reservation to visit the Cova Tallada on your own.
For all these reasons, our recommendation is that it is worth hiring the guided excursion and forget your worries.
Other ways to get to the Cova Tallada
In addition to the kayak route from Les Rotes (Denia), it is possible to arrive by kayak from Javea, although as it is a longer route there are no companies that do it.
It is also possible to get there by hiking the Cova Tallada from Denia, a route of high difficulty that requires booking in advance.
If you do not feel up to any of these alternatives, then you can do the catamaran excursion that will allow you to contemplate the Montgó Marine Reserve comfortably from the sea. A very pleasant and risk-free activity.
